Three published price levels
| Source | Single door | Double door | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| HomeStars, Ottawa page | $700–$1,500 | $1,200–$2,500 | Flat fee, labour and materials |
| One Ottawa firm’s list (July 2025) | $800–$1,500 basic steel | unpriced on the list | Door price; installation, springs and opener listed as separate lines |
| HomeStars, Canada-wide | $1,000–$5,000, about $2,500 typical | $2,500–$6,500 | Installed, by material |
HomeStars prices plain non-insulated steel at $1,000–$1,800 installed Canada-wide, which overlaps the Ottawa band. The Canada-wide rows climb with material: wood composite $2,500–$4,500, aluminum and glass $2,500–$7,000, solid wood or custom $3,500–$10,000 for a single door installed. A quote above the Ottawa band often reflects one of those materials, an oversized opening or work on the frame.
Width and height
A double door means a larger panel, heavier springs and a stronger opener. One double still usually costs less than two singles across the same width. Changing a double opening into two singles, or the reverse, adds $400–$1,200 in framing and finishing, and the City’s list of permit-free projects covers replacing doors in the same size opening. Heritage buildings fall outside those exemptions. More on double garage doors.
The replacement guide adds 15 to 25 percent for oversized or custom openings, common in newer builds with 8 to 10 foot heights. Custom heights for trucks or vans add roughly 20 to 40 percent. Stock 9 by 7 and 16 by 7 doors avoid custom panel pricing.
The core: what insulation adds
The installation guide prices insulation at $200–$600 per door. The replacement guide compares against a single-layer door: polystyrene, roughly R-6 to R-9, adds $300–$600; polyurethane, roughly R-12 to R-18, adds $600–$1,200. The Ottawa firm lists insulated steel at $1,000–$2,500 and up, R-8 to R-18. HomeStars treats R-12 or higher as a sensible target for an attached garage; on a detached garage used for parking, a basic door saves $600–$1,200. See insulated garage doors.
Glass, finish and trim
- Windows: $100–$500 per door on HomeStars; the Ottawa firm lists $25–$150 and up per window.
- Finish: smooth steel, woodgrain or a custom colour adds several hundred dollars over stock white.
- Handles and hinges: $50–$300. Aluminum capping: $250–$500.
Labour, the old door and the hardware
Labour runs $350–$700 per door on the installation guide; the replacement guide gives $300–$500 for a single, $400–$700 for a double or heavier door, up to $1,200 for oversized openings or framing corrections. Low headroom, masonry or a tight laneway push it up. The Ottawa firm lists installation at $300–$800 and up, covering removal, tracks, springs, cables, opener setup and testing.
New doors normally come with matched tracks, rollers and springs; reusing old ones shortens the life of the door and the opener. The firm lists a new torsion spring pair at $200–$400 and up. Rotted framing or an out-of-square opening adds $200–$800. Removal is usually in the labour; billed alone it runs $50–$250, or $50–$150 on the firm’s list.
The opener and the outlet
HomeStars gives $400–$900 installed for a new opener, belt drives at the top; the firm lists chain $350–$500, belt $500–$700. Openers made before 1993 lack the photo-eyes now required and should go. An outlet or circuit for the opener costs $150–$400, billed by an electrician. See opener installation cost.
Tax, deposit and the final bill
Ontario HST is 13%, so a $2,000 door before tax comes to $2,260. Ontario requires a written agreement for any job over $50 with an itemized list, the total with taxes, a payment schedule and dates. The province recommends a deposit of 10% or less. A business cannot charge more than 10% above an estimate unless you ask for extra or different work and both of you sign a change. A contract signed at home carries a 10-day cooling-off period.

Questions people ask
How much does a new garage door cost in Ottawa?
HomeStars’ Ottawa page puts most standard installations at $1,000–$2,500 and complex projects at $4,000 or more: a single door $700–$1,500 installed, a double $1,200–$2,500.
Why are the Canada-wide figures higher?
They price each material separately, up to $10,000 for solid wood or custom doors. A plain steel door sits near the Ottawa band; wood or glass sits in the upper rows.
Is one double door cheaper than two singles?
Usually, says HomeStars: one opener, one set of springs, one visit. Converting a double opening to two singles, or the reverse, adds $400–$1,200.
Does a new door come with a new opener?
Rarely, per HomeStars. Openers are quoted separately at $400–$900 installed. A younger opener with enough lifting power can often be remounted and reset.
Is late fall a cheaper time to order?
HomeStars says installer calendars open up in late fall and winter and pricing follows. Custom colours and window layouts take four to eight weeks to arrive.
