Garage door stuck, crooked or loud? Write it down, and a local company calls you back.
Say what the door does, what the opener does, and when it started. We pass the service tag to one independent Ottawa garage door company, and it calls you to book the visit and price the repair.
In short
- 01Ottawa homeowners can expect $150–$600 for a garage door repair, depending on the part, says the HomeStars Ottawa garage door page (seen 29.10.2026).
- 02A standard spring replacement in Ottawa runs $150–$350 on the same page; high-cycle or custom springs cost more.
- 03Leave a crooked door, or one with a snapped spring, where it is until the company arrives. Springs counterbalance the door's weight, and HomeStars notes a faulty spring can make the door fall.
- 04Ontario requires a written agreement for any home repair contract over $50, and caps the bill at 10% above an estimate in the contract unless you sign a change.

What to ask before you book
- Q1Is there a charge for the visit, and is it taken off the repair if I go ahead?
- Q2Will you price the parts and the labour as separate lines?
- Q3If one spring or cable is broken, do you recommend replacing the pair, and what does each option cost?
- Q4Do you charge extra after hours or for travel to my part of Ottawa?
- Q5Can I have the price and the HST in writing before you start?
Before the visit
- A photo of the whole door from inside, with the springs above it or along the sides
- A short video of the door trying to open, if the opener still runs
- The brand and model on the opener's motor unit, if you can read it from the floor
- Door width: single or double, and roughly how tall
- A car parked outside, and a clear path along both tracks
What to write on the service tag
A garage door company reads three things first:
- What the door does. “Loud bang, now the door will not lift.” “Door went up crooked and one side is off the track.” “Opener hums, door stays closed.” “Door reverses halfway down.”
- What you can see. A gap in the spring above the door, a cable hanging loose at the bottom corner, a dented panel, a roller out of its track.
- The setup. Single or double door, torsion spring above the door or extension springs along the sides, ceiling opener or one mounted on the wall beside the door.
Add a photo of the door from inside. Pick Today, This week or Flexible on the form.
The jobs, page by page
- Garage door springs: torsion or extension, one spring or the pair, and why a broken spring is a job for the company.
- Garage door opener: chain, belt or wall-mount, sensors that make the door reverse, remotes and keypads.
- New garage door: replacing the door, insulation for an attached garage, and when the City needs a permit.
Area pages: Kanata, Orléans, Barrhaven, Nepean.
What moves the price
The part comes first. A Canada-wide HomeStars guide lists a broken cable at $150–$350, a replaced panel at $350–$900 and opener repairs at $49–$299. Springs run $150–$350 on the same guide and have their own page.
Then the extras the same guide warns about: an emergency fee outside business hours, a disposal charge for old springs or panels, and a travel charge if your street sits outside the company’s usual area. Ask about all three on the call. Labour is billed by the hour at some companies and as a flat price at others, so ask which applies to your job.
What a good quote shows
Ask for the price in lines: each part by name, the labour, any trip or after-hours fee, and the HST. Two quotes only compare when they cover the same parts. One company may quote a single spring, another the pair plus new cables. HomeStars also advises getting the Ottawa job itemized in writing.
Ontario requires a written agreement for home repair work over $50. It shows the business name and contact details, the work, the total with taxes and the payment terms. If it carries an estimate, the final bill can go at most 10% above it unless you sign a change. The province recommends deposits of 10% of the total or less.

Questions
01How much does garage door repair cost in Ottawa?
The HomeStars Ottawa page puts repairs at $150–$600, depending on the issue and the parts. A standard spring replacement runs $150–$350 in Ottawa. The company that calls you prices your door once it hears what happened or sees it.
02The door is stuck halfway or hanging crooked. What should I do while I wait?
Leave it where it is and keep people and cars clear of it. Springs counterbalance the door’s weight, with the cables working alongside them, and HomeStars notes that a faulty spring can make the door fall unexpectedly. Unplugging the opener stops anyone pressing the button by mistake. Write in the service tag that the door is stuck, and pick Today on the form.
03Should I repair the door or replace it?
A Canada-wide HomeStars guide suggests replacing when several parts are failing at once, or when repairs reach about half the price of a new door. A single dented panel can be replaced while the model is still made; on older doors, a matching panel is often unavailable.
04Can I send a request for a rental or a townhouse with a shared garage?
Yes. Say in the service tag who owns the unit, who will open the garage for the visit, and whether a condo board or landlord has to approve the work.
05What if the company cannot take my job?
We ask you before passing the request to another company. Your details go to one company at a time.
