In short

  • One Ottawa firm lists a roller set from $100 before HST, rollers and labour, for the 10 to 12 rollers a typical door runs.
  • On that list, a roller set booked alone also carries a service call from $150.
  • A London, Ontario firm lists a full hinge set at $150–$275.
  • Sealed nylon rollers run quieter than steel and outlast plain plastic ones.

Rollers, hinges and bearings

Hinges join the door panels. Each edge hinge holds a roller: a wheel on a stem that runs in the track. The two bottom rollers sit in the brackets where the lift cables attach, under full spring tension, so roller work is a job for the company. On a torsion door the spring bar also turns in bearings; one Ottawa firm’s tune-up checklist names the end bearing plates and the centre bearing.

A seized roller slides along the track, the London, Ontario firm’s guide notes, grooves it and loads the hinges. That firm checks hinges for cracks and elongated holes before it changes rollers.

Plastic, nylon or steel

Figures from the London firm’s roller guide:

  • Plain plastic. The usual builder-grade roller, mostly without ball bearings. Five to seven years.
  • Sealed nylon. Quieter, easier on the track, less lubrication. 10,000+ cycles, ten to fifteen years.
  • Steel. For heavy doors. Louder, and unsealed steel rusts in a cold garage.

The stem must match your hinges, or it wobbles and wears both. One GTA firm’s guide puts nylon at $5–$10 more per roller.

What a set costs, and the service call

One Ottawa firm starts a roller set at $100 before HST; the count and nylon or steel set the final price. The London firm lists $120–$320 all in for a single door, a GTA firm $150–$300 for 12 to 14 rollers, and a Toronto guide $100–$200 for about an hour of work.

On the Ottawa list, the $150 service call is free on repairs over $250, so a set booked alone pays it, and a set paired with a repair that brings the total over $250 does not. A double door runs more rollers and hinges. Hinges are their own line: $150–$275 for the full set at the London firm.

Cold garages

The London guide notes that frost and thaw wear plastic wheels faster and let moisture into unsealed bearings, and that bottom rollers, nearest the floor, tend to fail first. One Ottawa firm books its pre-winter tune-up from September to early November, clearing old grease from hinges, rollers and bearings and applying a lubricant suited to cold. More on our maintenance page.

When rollers are part of a bigger repair

Worn rollers make the springs and opener work harder. The London firm calls a new opener on old rollers a false economy. Our garage door noise page sorts grinding and squeals by cause.

A roller out of the track is a different job: one Ottawa firm advises against running the opener on a derailed door. See door off track. If a spring is due too, combine the visit; see springs.

What the quote should list

  • Roller type and count
  • Whether the two bottom rollers are included
  • Each hinge or bearing, as its own line
  • The service call, or that it is waived
  • Lubrication and a balance check after the work
  • HST shown separately

In Ontario a contract over $50 must be in writing, and the bill can go at most 10% over the estimate unless you sign a change.

What to put in your request

Say where the sound comes from: one side, the top curve, the bottom. Note shaking, sticking or uneven travel, and any roller that looks cracked, flat or rusted. Mention the door’s age and whether the rollers were ever replaced. A video with sound and a few close photos let the company bring the right rollers, stems and hinges on the first visit.

Who you are dealing with

Ottawa Garage Door Desk passes your request to one independent local garage door company, which calls you back, quotes the parts and does the work.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Which rollers are you quoting: plastic, sealed nylon or steel?
  2. How many rollers is the full set on my door?
  3. Are the two bottom rollers at the cable brackets included?
  4. Which hinges or bearings are worn, and is each its own line?
  5. Is the service call on top of this price?

Have this ready for the call

  • Single or double door, and its size if you know it
  • A short video of the door running, with sound
  • Close photos of a few rollers, the hinges and the spring bar ends
  • Whether the garage is heated
  • A clear path to both sides of the door

Questions people ask

How many rollers does my door have?

Each section carries one at each end. The London firm counts eight on a four-section door and ten or twelve on a taller one. Count one side, double it, and put the number in your request.

Should all the rollers be replaced, or only the cracked ones?

Rollers on one door share the same mileage. The London firm writes that changing two leaves the rest worn and noisy. Ask for the set price and the single roller price.

Are nylon rollers worth it in an Ottawa garage?

For most residential sectional doors the London firm recommends sealed nylon. Steel suits heavy doors, and unsealed steel rusts in unheated garages. One Ottawa firm calls cracked steel rollers a common winter failure here.

Can rollers be done during a spring repair?

Yes, and it saves a visit. One Ottawa firm lists a spring pair with a roller set from $500 before HST. HomeStars notes that worn cables, bearings and brackets add to a spring job’s total.

My door is new. Do I need new rollers?

HomeStars says new doors normally come with matched tracks, rollers and springs in the package price. On a recent door, raise a noisy roller with the installer first.

Is the service call extra on a roller job?

It depends on the company. On one Ottawa firm’s list, a call starts at $150 and is free on repairs over $250. The London firm folds the visit into its $120–$320 range. Ask before the visit.

How long does a roller set take?

The London firm puts a full roller change on a standard single or double door at one to two hours, and a Toronto guide lists about an hour for a set. Hinges, a bent track or a spring found on the visit add time and get quoted first.
