In short
- Chamberlain lists four reasons an opener stops short: a door out of balance, force settings that drifted, resistance it senses, and travel it can no longer measure.
- The same maker says to use the emergency release only when the door is fully closed, if possible: with weak or broken springs, the door may fall rapidly.
- Garage door repairs in Ottawa run $150–$600 on HomeStars; the cause found sets where a job lands.

Where it stopped, and which way it was going
A stopped door gives two clues. The first is direction. Chamberlain explains that its Security+ 2.0 openers stop when they meet an obstruction on the way up, and reverse when they meet it on the way down. A door frozen at mid-height while opening may have been stopped by the opener on purpose. A door that came down, hit something and went back up partly is a closing problem, covered on the page about a door that won’t close.
The second clue is the shape. A door hanging level, with the opener light blinking, points at the opener’s settings or something in the track. A door hanging crooked, with a gap under one end, points at the lifting parts on the low side. Write both clues in the first line of your request.
Four causes behind a half-open door
- A cable off its drum or snapped. The door tilts toward the broken side and often jams in the track. See broken garage door cables.
- A spring that broke mid-travel. The opener loses the help that balanced the door, strains, and stops. A loud bang from the garage beforehand is worth a line in the request. See garage door springs.
- A bent track or a jammed roller. The door stops at the same spot every time, sometimes with a scrape or a crunch. Rollers outside the rail are a door off its track.
- The opener itself. Chamberlain names force settings that are no longer correct, resistance from loose or damaged parts, and travel limits the opener can no longer read.
A power cut while the door is moving leaves it wherever it was. Genie warns that snow and ice on lines, or poles hit on bad roads, take the power out in winter.
Why the red cord waits
The pull cord on the opener rail disconnects the motor from the door. Chamberlain’s instructions say to use it only when the door is fully closed, if possible, because a door with weak or broken springs may fall rapidly and without warning. The same page says to stop immediately if the door feels unusually heavy, will not stay open or slams shut, and not to work the door by hand when springs, cables or rollers look damaged.
A half-open door with a suspect spring or cable meets every one of those conditions. Keep children, pets and cars out from under the door and wait for the company.
A night with the door part open
Genie notes that cold makes metal parts contract, which can lead to misaligned tracks and a sluggish door.
What changes the urgency: a car parked inside, a garage attached to the house with an interior door, freezers or tools in the garage, and whether the opening can be closed off. Put those in your request; they decide whether a night visit is worth its after-hours charge.
What the repair costs, by cause
HomeStars puts garage door repairs in Ottawa at $150–$600. The cause sets the bill, whatever the height where the door stopped. Track realignment sits at the short end; a spring job runs higher. HomeStars lists a single torsion spring at $160–$330 and a double torsion spring at $280–$510.
A door stuck halfway can carry two faults. HomeStars notes that springs and cables usually wear together, and a door that came down crooked can push rollers out of the track. Ask what happens to the price if a second part turns up once the door is secured. HomeStars adds that hourly labour of $60–$150 can run higher for urgent service.
What the quote should list
Under Ontario’s consumer rules for home renovation, any contract over $50 has to be written, a bill may exceed its estimate by 10% at most unless you sign a change, and signing at home gives you 10 days to cancel.
On this job, the paper should name the cause found and price each part on its own line: cables, drums, springs, rollers, track. Then the opener reset, the balance check, labour, any after-hours charge and HST.
Who you are dealing with
Ottawa Garage Door Desk is a request service. Your request goes to one independent Ottawa garage door company. That company calls you back, looks at the door where it stopped, prices the repair and does the work.
Questions to ask the company
- Which part stopped the door: a cable, a spring, the track, or the opener itself?
- Is the price for one cable or spring, or for both sides?
- If the opener needs its travel limits or force reset after the repair, is that inside this price?
- Will you check the balance of the door with the opener disconnected before you leave?
- Is there an after-hours charge, and what is the total with HST?
Have this ready for the call
- How high the door stopped, roughly in centimetres at each bottom corner, and whether it was opening or closing
- Photos taken from outside the door's path: both bottom corners, the shaft or pulleys above the door, the opener rail
- Any bang, grind or scrape before it stopped, and whether the power was on
- The opener brand and model from the motor label, and how many times its light flashed
- Whether a car is inside and whether the garage opens into the house
Questions people ask
Can I pull the red cord and lower the door by hand?
Chamberlain’s own instructions say to use the emergency release only when the door is fully closed, if possible, because a door with weak or broken springs may fall rapidly and without warning. A door stuck halfway is the position that warning describes. Leave the cord alone, keep people and cars clear, and say in your request that the door is still open.
The door stopped on the way up and the opener beeped. What was that?
On Chamberlain Security+ 2.0 openers, a door that meets an obstruction while opening stops, the opener beeps and the lights blink five times; while closing, it reverses, beeps and blinks five times. Count the flashes and put the number and the opener model in your request. It tells the company whether the opener stopped on purpose.
One side is higher than the other. Is it the opener?
A tilt points at the parts that lift each side: a cable, its drum or a spring. Name the low side and send a photo of both bottom corners and the shaft above the door.
Could the technician just turn up the force?
Chamberlain’s troubleshooting starts with the door: when the door does not move smoothly by hand, the issue likely sits in the door itself. More force on a door that binds pushes harder against the fault. Ask for the cause before any setting is changed.
