What works and what fails

An opener takes orders from up to five places: hand-held remotes, the wired wall button, an exterior keypad, buttons built into the car, and a phone app through a Wi-Fi module. The pattern of failures points to the fault. Write it plainly in the form: “wall button works, both remotes and the keypad dead” tells the company more than “the opener is broken”.

  • One remote of two. The trouble most likely sits in that remote. HomeStars says new batteries or reprogramming may resolve a remote problem and puts the cost at $50–$100.
  • Every remote flaky, wall button fine. One Ottawa firm’s FAQ points to the opener’s antenna or internal receiver when all remotes are inconsistent, and to interference such as a new LED bulb. If the door still refuses to move, see our page on a door that won’t open.
  • Everything, wall button included. The opener or its power has failed, and the job is priced as an opener repair.

Lost remotes, new owners, sold cars

A missing remote, a house bought with the previous owner’s remotes, or a tenant who moved out all raise one question: who else can open the garage? The answer is to clear the opener’s memory and pair again only the controls you keep. One Ottawa firm’s guide notes that clearing erases every remote and keypad at once, and it recommends a pro when a lost remote is a security worry. List every remote, the keypad and every car in your request so all of them are paired together.

HomeLink’s support page says openers made after 1995 may carry rolling code protection, a signal that changes with each press. The Ottawa firm notes that older openers can use fixed codes set by small switches inside the motor unit and each remote. If yours has those, ask about a newer unit; our opener installation page covers that job. HomeLink also suggests erasing the trained garage buttons when a car is sold or its lease ends.

Car buttons and older openers

Car buttons in the visor, console or mirror are usually trained from a working hand-held remote, and the vehicle maker’s bulletin advises keeping the original. HomeLink gives its range as 288 to 433 MHz and says some older openers drift outside that band. A vehicle maker’s 2016 service bulletin states that openers made before 1993 will not pair with any HomeLink device, bridge kit or none.

Newer openers can need a bridge too. HomeLink lists certain openers with a yellow antenna wire, made since 2011, that need its bridge kit to work with an older car system. Rolling code pairing also means reaching the learn button on the motor unit, which HomeLink says may take a stepladder. Give the car’s make and model year with the opener label, and the company can say on the call which case applies.

Keypads, apps and outages

An exterior keypad runs $50–$100 on HomeStars’ replacement guide and gives entry without a remote. Ask for the code to be set with you present. App control needs a usable Wi-Fi signal where the opener hangs; note where your router sits.

Power cuts stop every control at once. On May 21, 2022, a derecho cut power to 180,946 Hydro Ottawa customers, with 11,528 more in the days after, 54% of its customers in all. HomeStars says a battery backup keeps some openers running for a limited number of cycles. On a new opener, Wi-Fi, battery backup or camera features add $100–$300.

What the quote should list

The quote names each device by model, the number of units, the pairing, any memory clearing, the service call and HST. If the company finds a receiver or logic board fault, ask for that repair and a new opener priced side by side. The sensors are worth a test on the same visit.

Ontario requires a written agreement for home repair contracts over $50. An estimate in the contract can rise by at most 10% without a signed change, and a contract signed at home has a 10-day cooling-off period.

Who receives your request

Ottawa Garage Door Desk is a request service. We pass what you write in the form to one independent local garage door company. That company calls you back, works out which controls fit your opener, prices the devices or the repair, and does the work.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Which remotes and keypads work with my opener, and does the price cover the device, the pairing, or both?
  2. After a lost remote, will you clear the memory and pair again every remote, keypad and car I keep?
  3. Does my car need a bridge kit to work with this opener?
  4. If the fault is inside the opener, what does that repair cost next to a new unit?
  5. Will the Wi-Fi signal reach the opener where it hangs now?

Have this ready for the call

  • A photo of the motor unit label, and one of the learn button with its colour
  • Every control you use: remotes, keypad, each car's make and model year
  • Which controls fail, which work, and what the wall button does
  • Whether the opener's bulb was changed shortly before the trouble
  • Whether a remote is lost or a previous owner may still hold one

Questions people ask

Can a universal remote replace the original?

Often. One Ottawa firm warns that universal does not always mean universal for a given opener; brand, model and age decide it. A photo of the motor label lets the company name the remote that fits.

Range dropped after I put an LED bulb in the opener. Related?

It can be. An opener maker said in 2016 that common LED bulbs can limit remote range on almost any brand of opener. Mention the bulb change so it gets checked before parts are priced.

Will my remotes work with a new opener?

HomeStars says most makers use their own radio frequency, so an opener from another brand usually means new remotes and a new keypad. Ask for them in the same quote.

Can I open the door from my phone?

Many openers take a Wi-Fi module, $60–$150 on HomeStars’ guide. Its opener guide says a unit near the edge of the garage, away from steel doors and reinforced walls, gives steadier phone control.

The wall button is dead too. Still a remote problem?

When every control fails together, the opener or its power is the likely cause. Our garage door opener page covers that repair.
