The licences that exist for this job

Skilled Trades Ontario’s apprenticeship chart, updated June 2026, has no garage door program. Its 23 compulsory trades, where a worker must hold a certificate or be a registered apprentice, include electrician and plumber. The City of Ottawa licenses snow plow contractors, hardscaping contractors and public garages; garage door installers are absent from its list.

So when an ad uses the word licence, ask which one and who issued it. Two checks carry weight:

  • Electrical work. A new outlet or circuit for an opener is electrical work, and in Ontario nobody may run an electrical contracting business without a contractor licence from the Electrical Safety Authority. Note the ESA number and look for it on the estimate. For the opener itself, see opener installation.
  • Workplace insurance. Ontario’s consumer page says construction workers and independent operators must carry WSIB coverage, with some exceptions, and sends you to the WSIB to check.

Looking a company up

The province keeps the Consumer Beware List: businesses that ignored two ministry notices about a complaint, or were charged or convicted under the Consumer Protection Act. An entry stays 21 to 27 months. One operator may run several businesses or change a name, so search both the company and the owner.

Ontario also suggests at least 3 references from people who dealt with the company themselves on similar work, some recent and some older. The same page says dealing with a local company may make it easier to check references, enforce a warranty or have follow-up work done.

What a low advertised price buys

One Ottawa firm’s published list shows how a headline figure works. Its $79 tune-up covers a door that needs adjusting and lubricating. Springs on the same list run $300 to $800, cables $315 to $415. Each number prices a different job.

Read every low figure that way. HomeStars lists the extras that grow a bill: hourly labour, emergency fees outside business hours, disposal of old parts and travel outside a service area. The wider ranges are on garage door repair cost in Ottawa.

The Competition Act treats an advertised price that fixed mandatory fees make unattainable as false or misleading. Taxes set by law, such as HST, sit outside that rule.

Estimates you can compare

Ontario’s advice: written estimates from at least 3 contractors, and none accepted over the phone or before anyone has seen the door. Each should list products and services with a price for each. Good contractors, the province adds, ask a lot of questions.

With a broken spring and a car inside, three visits may be more time than you have. Then the one visit is the estimate: get the itemized price in writing before work starts. Have it written into the contract, and the final bill can go at most 10% above it unless you sign a change for new work.

Warranties, in writing

HomeStars’ Ottawa page says most installers cover labour and parts in some form, and manufacturer warranties on doors and openers are common, with varying periods. Those are two promises: the maker’s on the part, the installer’s on the work. Ask how long each runs, what it covers and who you call. Ontario requires the contract to describe warranties clearly, and its consumer page adds that reputation and time in business weigh more than the warranty.

Red flags at the door

  • The door-to-door deal. A crew “in the neighbourhood” offers a special price if you sign now, or a free inspection that ends in an urgent, costly repair.
  • The large deposit “for materials”. Ontario recommends 10% down at most and full payment only after the work.
  • The paper-free deal. Missing estimate, contract or permit, or cash without a detailed, signed receipt.

For a full replacement, the City exempts a door in the same size opening from a building permit; heritage buildings get no exemption. If the company handles a permit, write that into the contract. See new garage door.

Where this desk fits

Ottawa Garage Door Desk passes your request to one independent local garage door company. That company calls you back, looks at the door, sets its own price and does the work. Run the checks above on it, as you would on any company.

Questions people ask

Does a garage door company need a licence in Ontario?

Ontario’s chart of apprenticeship programs lists no garage door trade, and the City of Ottawa’s business licence list leaves garage door companies out. Electrical work is different: an electrical contracting business needs a licence from the Electrical Safety Authority.

How do I look up a garage door company before hiring it?

Search the business name and the owner’s name on Ontario’s Consumer Beware List, check recent convictions under the Consumer Protection Act, and ask for references from people who had similar work done.

Why is the final price higher than the advertised one?

A low advertised figure often prices one narrow job, such as a tune-up. Parts, after-hours work, disposal of old parts and travel can add to the bill. Under the Competition Act, a price that fixed mandatory fees make impossible to pay is misleading; taxes such as HST are excluded.

How much deposit should I pay?

Ontario recommends a deposit of 10% of the total or less, with the balance paid once the work is done. A request for a large deposit to buy materials is one of the scams the province describes.

What warranty should I ask for?

HomeStars notes that most Ottawa installers give some warranty on labour and parts, with manufacturer warranties on the door and opener, and periods vary. Ask for the length and what each covers, written into the contract.

Can I cancel a contract I signed at home?

For a repair contract of $50 or more signed in your home, Ontario gives 10 calendar days to cancel for any reason, without cancellation fees. If work started at your request inside those days, you owe reasonable payment for work and materials already provided.
