- Four parts take the winter: the bottom seal, the grease on moving parts, the springs and the safety eyes at floor level.
- One Ottawa firm counts an average of 32 nights a winter below −15 °C at the airport over ten winters, 13 of them below −20 °C.
- Garage door repair in Ottawa runs $150–$600 depending on the part, and a standard spring $150–$350 (HomeStars).

What the cold does, part by part
One Ottawa firm counted Environment Canada daily lows at the airport over the last ten winters: an average of 32 nights below −15 °C and 13 below −20 °C. Four parts feel it first.
- The bottom seal. Wet snow and meltwater sit under the rubber and freeze overnight, so the door is glued to the concrete. A door maker warns that forcing it open can rip the seal.
- Grease on rollers, hinges and the opener drive. Lubricant hardens in the cold, and the door moves slowly, sticks partway or the opener strains.
- Springs. That door maker writes that spring wire turns more brittle in cold weather, so springs break more often in winter. An opener maker adds that metal parts contract and tracks can drift out of line. The Ottawa firm notes the steel itself changes length very little, and that the popping on a cold first run comes mostly from stiff grease.
- The safety eyes. They sit low on the tracks, right where slush and snow collect. A second Ottawa firm notes that road salt and snow fog the lenses.
Matching the winter symptom to the visit
| What the door did | Likely part | What to book | Published price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frozen to the floor | Bottom seal, then the opener | Seal and opener check | Seal $180–$340 + GST, one Calgary list |
| Slow, jerky, stops partway | Hardened grease, rollers | Tune-up or roller repair | $79 tune-up, one Ottawa list |
| Bang on a cold morning, door heavy | Spring | Spring replacement | $150–$350, HomeStars Ottawa |
| Goes down, then back up after a storm | Safety eyes, ice at the threshold | Sensor and threshold check | $50–$75, HomeStars |

Three bookings across the season
Before the freeze, September to early November. One Ottawa firm books its pre-winter tune-up in that window at $79 before HST. It wipes off old grease, applies a lubricant suited to cold and checks the bottom seal for cracks and gaps. Our maintenance page covers what a tune-up includes.
Deep winter, December to February. Repairs that cannot wait: a snapped spring, a car shut in, a door that will not close at night. HomeStars warns that work outside business hours can carry emergency fees. One Ottawa firm says it adds no evening or weekend surcharge. Ask before you book.
The thaw, March and April. Time to price what the winter exposed. HomeStars notes weather can warp, dent or discolour panels. One Calgary firm reports that road salt tracked in on the tires speeds up wear at the ends of the bottom seal. Our weather seal page breaks down the bottom rubber, side stops and threshold.
A snow day and a repair visit
Between November 15 and April 1 the City can call a Winter Weather Parking Ban for freezing rain or a forecast of 7 cm of snow or more. Overnight bans run 7 pm to 7 am. The City also makes the windrow at the end of your driveway your job. Clear it, and shovel a strip in front of the door, so the technician can park and work.
If the power is out, write that in the form. An opener without battery backup will not move the door until Hydro Ottawa restores service. On a new opener, HomeStars lists battery backup, Wi-Fi or a camera at $100–$300 extra. Our opener page covers repair against replacement.
A stuck door and a running engine
On December 22, 2024, ten people were taken to hospital from a home on Granville Street in Vanier. Police said a vehicle had been left running in the garage to warm up while the door stayed shut. If your door is frozen or jammed closed, keep the engine off until the door is open.
Ontario’s Fire Code requires carbon monoxide alarms in homes with an attached garage: near each sleeping area and, from January 1, 2026, on every storey.
What a winter request should say
- What happened first: a bang, a hum, a door that reversed, a door glued to the floor.
- The temperature that morning, and whether it followed snow, freezing rain or a thaw.
- Whether the opener ran against ice, and whether the door sits level.
- Attached or detached garage, heated or not, and any room above it.
- Whether a car is shut inside and whether the power is on.
- A photo of the bottom edge and one of the springs above the door.
Ontario requires a written agreement for repair work over $50, and the final bill can go at most 10% over the estimate unless you sign a change. Ask for each part, the labour, any after-hours fee and HST on separate lines.
Who handles your request
Ottawa Garage Door Desk is a request service. What you write in the form goes to one independent local garage door company. That company calls you back, looks at the door, quotes the winter repair and does the work. You decide whether to go ahead.
Questions people ask
Why do garage doors seem to fail more in January?
One door maker writes that spring wire turns more brittle in the cold, so worn springs break more often in winter. Grease also thickens and the bottom seal can freeze to the slab. One Ottawa firm writes that a tired spring tends to snap in January.
The door is frozen to the floor. What should I book?
Ask for a look at the bottom seal and the opener. A door maker warns that forcing a frozen door can tear the seal, and an opener maker notes ice under the door can damage both the door and the opener. Say in the form whether the opener ran against the ice.
Can I warm up the car inside the garage?
Only with the big door open. In December 2024 ten people in Vanier went to hospital after a car was left running to warm up in a garage with the door shut, police said. If the door is stuck closed, leave the engine off until it opens.
Does an attached garage mean I need carbon monoxide alarms?
Yes. Under the Ontario Fire Code, a home with an attached garage needs CO alarms near each sleeping area and, from January 1, 2026, on every storey. The local fire department enforces it.
What happens to my repair on a parking-ban day?
The City can call a Winter Weather Parking Ban between November 15 and April 1, and cars on the street without a residential permit may be towed. Clear the end of the driveway so the company’s vehicle can park off the street.
