In short

  • Five usual causes: a broken spring, a snapped cable, the opener or its power, a lock, or a bottom seal frozen to the floor.
  • A motor that hums briefly and quits points first to broken springs, says one opener maker's manual.
  • HomeStars' Ottawa garage door page lists repairs at $150–$600 depending on the issue and components.
  • A heavy or crooked door stays closed: HomeStars warns a faulty spring can make a door fall.

Five ways a door stays shut

Each cause sounds different and needs a different part:

  • A broken spring. The springs counterbalance the door, so the opener now faces its full weight. See broken spring.
  • A snapped cable. Cables work with the springs to lift the door evenly. One loose cable can leave it stuck or crooked. See broken cable.
  • The opener or its power. An outage, a dead outlet, a remote in lock mode, a worn motor.
  • A lock. A slide bolt or centre handle holds the door down whatever the opener does.
  • Ice. The bottom seal freezes to the concrete when water or wet snow under it turns to ice.

What the opener tells you

Write down the opener’s reaction word for word.

It hums or strains and the door stays down. One opener maker’s manual lists broken springs first, and warns against turning up the force setting to make the opener lift the door. HomeStars adds that a new opener will not fix a door that binds or sags; the motor just wears out faster.

It lifts partway and stops. Note whether one side came up first. HomeStars calls cables critical for lifting the door evenly.

Remotes dead, wall button working. On openers with a lock button, lock mode flashes the door control LED and blocks the remotes.

Nothing at all. Check the Hydro Ottawa outage map first. If the street has power, say so in your request; HomeStars lists a logic board that loses its program among the signs of a failing opener. More on the opener page.

Heavy, crooked or a loud bang

A bang from the garage, a cable hanging at a bottom corner, a door crooked in its tracks: put these in the first line of your request. The door stays closed and the opener stays off until the company has seen it.

Stand back for the photo so it shows the spring bar and both bottom corners. Showing torsion or extension springs, one or two, helps the company bring the right parts on the first visit.

Locked, or frozen at the bottom

The opener manual above names a locked door as a cause when the motor hums on the first try of the day. Tell the company whether the door has a lock and whether anyone used it.

Ice is the winter cause. If the opener already pulled against a frozen seal, write that down so the company checks the seal and the opener too. The winter page covers what cold does to the rest of the door.

Car inside, power out, parking ban

Between November 15 and April 1 the City can call a Winter Weather Parking Ban for freezing rain or 7 cm or more of forecast snow, and vehicles on the street without a residential parking permit may be ticketed and towed. A car shut in the garage, or left on the street because the door is stuck, belongs in your request. Pick Today on the form.

Garages with no side door have one more item. One opener maker sells an outside release that frees the door from the opener with a key, and its support page says many areas require one on garages with no secondary access door. Ask for a price if you have been locked out before.

Price and the quote

The part sets most of the price; the table above lists the common ones. Timing adds the rest: HomeStars lists labour at $60–$150 an hour, higher for urgent service, and warns about emergency fees outside business hours, disposal fees for old springs and travel charges outside a company’s usual area. Ask how a visit is billed if the door only needs freeing or unlocking.

Ask for each part by name, the labour, any after-hours or travel fee, and HST. Ontario requires a written agreement for home repair work over $50, and a bill can go at most 10% over an estimate in that agreement unless you sign a change.

Who you are dealing with

Ottawa Garage Door Desk passes your request to one independent local garage door company. That company calls you back, prices the repair and does the work.

Questions to ask the company

  1. From what I described, which part do you expect to replace, and what does each part cost?
  2. If one spring broke, does your price cover one spring or the pair, and the cables?
  3. Will you check the door's balance before you work on the opener?
  4. Is there an after-hours or weekend charge, and from what time?
  5. What do you charge if the door only needs freeing or unlocking?

Have this ready for the call

  • A photo from inside showing the spring above the door and both bottom corners
  • What the opener did: hummed, clicked, flashed its light, or nothing
  • Whether the wall button behaves differently from the remotes
  • A clear floor in front of the door and a path to the opener
  • Where the car is, and whether the garage has a side door

Questions people ask

The opener hums, but the door stays down. What does that mean?

One opener maker’s manual lists broken springs first for a motor that hums briefly and quits, and a locked door if it happens on the first run of the day. Put the hum in your request; the company sorts out which it is.

The remotes do nothing, but the wall button works.

Many openers have a lock button on the wall control. One maker’s support page says that in lock mode the door control LED flashes constantly, the remotes will not operate the opener, and the opener light flashes twice when you press a remote. Mention a flashing wall control in your request.

The power is out on my street.

Check the Hydro Ottawa outage map or report the outage at 613-738-0188. HomeStars notes every opener has a manual release cord that disconnects the door from the motor during an outage, and some models offer a battery backup for a limited number of cycles.

Can I lift the door by hand if a spring is broken?

Leave it. HomeStars warns that a faulty spring can make the door fall and that spring tension can cause injury. The opener manual above says a balanced door stays put at any point on its springs alone, and if it does not, to call for professional service.

The door is frozen to the garage floor.

A door maker’s cold-weather guide says the bottom seal freezes to the concrete when it sits in water or wet snow, and forcing the door can rip the seal. Say in your request whether the opener strained against it.
