Three cases that usually cannot wait
Three situations are the ones people usually call urgent:
- A car shut inside. The door will not lift, and the car is needed for work, school or a flight.
- A door stuck open at night. It will not come down, and the garage stays open to the street.
- A spring that snapped. A loud bang, then a door that feels heavy or sits crooked.
They often overlap. A snapped spring is the usual reason a car ends up shut in. Name your case in the first line of your request, then add the details.
What Today does on your request
The form has a When field with three choices: Today, This week and Flexible. This week is selected when the page opens, so change it if the job is urgent. Today travels with your request to the one company that receives it.
Today is your timing. The company that calls back tells you when it can come and if an evening visit costs more. If its earliest slot is tomorrow morning, you choose between that and a visit tonight to make the door safe.
The words next to the button matter as much. “Car inside, torsion spring broken, need it out by 7 a.m.” tells the company which parts to load. “Door stuck 30 cm open, one side lower, cable hanging” points to the cable or the track.
A door stuck open at night
The Ottawa Police Service advises parking inside a garage when you have one, in a locked garage or with the car blocked tightly by a second vehicle. A door that will not close undoes that.
The red cord on the opener is the trap. One opener maker’s manual says to use the manual release, if possible, only with the door closed, and warns that weak or broken springs may let an open door fall rapidly and cause injury or death. Leave the cord alone, keep people and pets out from under the door, and lock the door between the garage and the house.
In your request, say how far the door is open, whether it sits level or tilted, and whether a cable hangs loose. Ask if the company can secure the door tonight should the full repair wait for a part.
A car shut inside
Here the door is usually closed and stays closed; the urgent part is the hour you need the car. The same manual says repairs to cables, spring assemblies and other hardware must be made by a professional.
Two other causes look the same from the driveway. A power cut stops the opener; Hydro Ottawa takes outage reports at 613-738-0188 and runs an outage map. A lock or a frozen seal can also hold the door down. The won’t open page sorts the causes.
After the bang: a snapped spring
Springs counterbalance the door. HomeStars warns that a faulty spring can make the door fall unexpectedly and that spring tension can cause injury. A photo helps the company bring the right parts: one spring across the top or two, or springs along the tracks on each side. One spring or the pair is covered on the springs page.
What an urgent visit costs
The part sets most of the price; timing adds the rest. HomeStars’ Canada-wide guide puts labour at $60–$150 an hour, higher for urgent service, and names after-hours and travel fees among hidden costs. One Ottawa firm’s list says its emergency jobs use its regular ranges.
Ask on the call: the after-hours charge and from what hour, and the cost of a make-safe visit if the part comes later. Ontario requires a written agreement for contracts over $50, and a bill can go at most 10% over an estimate in it unless you sign a change. A contract signed at home also carries a 10-day cooling-off period.
Who you are dealing with
Ottawa Garage Door Desk passes your request, with the timing you picked, to one independent local garage door company. That company calls you back, says when it can come, prices the repair and does the work.
Questions to ask the company
- Is there an extra charge for an evening, weekend or holiday visit, and from what hour?
- If tonight you can only make the door safe, what does that first visit cost?
- Does your spring price cover one spring or the pair, and the cables?
- Will I get the price in writing before you start, with parts, labour and HST?
- If the repair waits until tomorrow, can you leave the door closed and secured tonight?
Have this ready for the call
- A photo from inside: the springs above the door and both bottom corners
- Whether the door is up, down or stuck partway, and how far
- Where the car is, and the time you need it out
- A clear floor under the door, with children and pets kept out
- What the opener did the last time anyone pressed the button
Questions people ask
What does Today on the form mean?
It sends your timing with the request, so the company knows the job is urgent before it calls. The company then says when it can come and what an urgent visit costs, and you decide.
The door is stuck open and it is getting dark. Can I pull the red release cord?
One opener maker’s manual says to use the manual release, if possible, only when the door is closed, because weak or broken springs may let an open door fall rapidly. Leave the cord alone and keep everyone out from under the door.
The spring snapped, but the door is closed. Is that urgent?
It depends on the car. A closed door with a broken spring usually stays closed. If the car is inside and you need it, choose Today. If the car is out and the house is secure, This week leaves time to compare prices.
Do I pay more at night or on a weekend?
Sometimes. HomeStars lists emergency fees outside business hours among the hidden costs of a repair. Ask the company that calls you before it sets out.
Can I cancel after the technician starts work tonight?
Ontario gives a 10-day cooling-off period on a contract signed at home. If you asked the company to start right away and then cancel, the province says it is entitled to reasonable payment for work and materials it cannot take back.
