What off track looks like from inside the garage

One or more rollers sit outside the steel rail. The bottom edge tilts, and the door stops partway, crooked in the opening. Before it jams, a door on a bent track grinds, scrapes or jumps, and gaps open between panels, one Ottawa firm notes.

Look from a safe distance, without pushing on the door. Note which side came out, the height where it stopped, and whether the cable on each side still runs tight to the bottom of the door. Those facts help the company plan the visit.

Three things that knock a door out of its track

Impact. A ladder or bike bumps the vertical track, or a snow shovel or hockey puck hits it. The same firm lists accidents like these, plus age and Ottawa’s freeze-thaw cycles, among the causes of bent track. Rollers leave the rail at the bend.

Rollers and bolts. Rollers crack, chip or seize with age, and HomeStars says roller trouble makes travel noisy and jerky. Vibration from daily use also shakes track bolts loose until the rail visibly shifts. Worn parts have their own page: rollers and hinges.

Cable or spring. HomeStars calls the cables critical for lifting the door evenly and avoiding misalignment. When a cable snaps, the door sags on one side and the rollers there are pulled out of line. If the door slammed down or will not lift evenly, a spring is the other suspect.

Why the door stays where it stopped

A derailed door is wedged at an angle and still under spring tension. The Ottawa firm warns against forcing it open or closed and advises unplugging the opener so nobody triggers it. The firm also advises securing the door against sudden drops before anyone works on it.

The opener is the wrong tool here. HomeStars warns that a new opener will not fix a door that binds or sags, and that the motor wears out faster carrying weight the door should balance. An old opener fighting a bent track strains and overheats too.

So the door stays put until someone sets it back in the rail and checks the balance. Take out what you need through another door, and tell the company if a car is inside.

What the repair covers

Most off-track jobs come in one of three sizes.

  • Realignment. The firm’s list describes this job as straightening bent tracks, tightening loose bolts and making sure the rollers move smoothly. It prices it at $150–$250, parts and labour. A Toronto guide shows $100–$200 for a set of rollers.
  • Track section. The same firm puts track repair at $150–$400 and says straightening works only on minor damage. A bigger bend may need a new length of track.
  • Track plus springs or cables. The firm lists $300–$600 for severe damage or spring work. A Canada-wide guide gives $200–$500 for springs and cables together.

Labour runs $60 to $150 an hour in that Canada-wide guide, higher for urgent visits. A panel creased in the fall is its own line: HomeStars lists $350–$900 per panel, by material.

What the quote should list

Ask for each part as its own line, so two quotes compare:

  • the service call or diagnosis fee, if any;
  • each length of track straightened or replaced, and which side;
  • the number and type of rollers changed;
  • cables, drums and springs, each marked checked or replaced;
  • resetting the opener’s force and travel limits;
  • any after-hours charge, and HST.

Ontario’s guide for renovation businesses requires a written agreement for any contract over $50. With an estimate in it, the bill can go at most 10% over unless you sign a change for extra work. The province recommends a deposit of no more than 10%.

When the door itself is damaged

Panels on older doors may be discontinued, so ask whether a matching section is still made. When the repair reaches half the price of a new door, HomeStars suggests looking at replacement; see repair or replace. If you go new, HomeStars advises against reusing old tracks and springs: they were matched to the old door’s weight.

Who you are dealing with

Ottawa Garage Door Desk takes your request and passes it to one independent local garage door company. That company calls you back, looks at the door, prices the repair and does the work. Your agreement and payment are with that company.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Can the bent section be straightened, or does it need new track, and what does each cost?
  2. How many rollers will you change, and are they nylon or steel?
  3. Will you check both cables, the drums and the springs, and list each separately?
  4. Will you reset the opener's force and travel limits once the door runs again?
  5. Is there an after-hours charge, and can I have the total with HST in writing first?

Have this ready for the call

  • A photo of the whole door from inside, and a close-up where the roller left the track
  • Which side came out, and how high the door stopped
  • What happened just before: a bump from the car, a bang, grinding, or nothing
  • Whether a car is parked inside, and whether the garage has another way in
  • Door size, single or double, and roughly how old it is

Questions people ask

My door is stuck half open and crooked. Can I park under it?

Keep cars, kids and pets out from under it until the company has seen it. One Ottawa firm’s guidance on derailed doors: leave the door where it is, unplug the opener, and keep away if a spring or cable looks broken.

Can I close it with the remote so the house is secure overnight?

An opener working against a bent or derailed door strains and overheats, the same firm notes, and HomeStars says to sort an off-track door before anyone touches the opener. If the open garage leaves the house exposed, say so in your request.

One side hangs lower than the other. Is that the track?

A door that sags on one side often points to a cable on that side. Send a photo of both cables. Our page on broken cables covers that repair.

The car is trapped inside. What do I tell the company?

Put it in the first line of your request, with the time you need the car out. HomeStars notes that some companies charge an after-hours fee, so ask before agreeing to an evening visit.

Does a derailment mean a new door?

That depends on what the fall damaged. HomeStars suggests weighing a new door when several parts fail at once or the repair passes half the price of a new one.
