List A gives starting prices for a standard job, part and labour together. List D gives ranges with parts and labour and dates from August 2025. List C says it gives its price after looking at the door. List B shows only a starting price for spring repair.
Why springs show the widest spread
Across the four lists, springs run from $250 to $800. The reasons:
- One spring or the pair. A door with two torsion springs usually gets both replaced together. List A prices that pair from $400, against $275 for a single.
- Door size. List A says a door taller than 7 feet or wider than 16 feet needs a larger spring, which moves the price up.
- Cycle rating. High-cycle springs are built for more trips up and down and cost more, per the HomeStars Ottawa page.
- Spring type. HomeStars puts a torsion spring at $30–$180 for the part and $150–$395 for the labour; an extension spring at $20–$150 and $100–$250. In those ranges the labour is the larger share.
The torsion and extension spring comparison sets the two types side by side, and the spring repair page covers the repair itself.
Charges outside the repair line
Ask about these before anyone arrives:
- Service call. List A charges from $150 for the call, free when the repair is over $250.
- After hours. HomeStars lists emergency fees for jobs outside regular hours, and its spring guide says hourly labour can run higher for urgent service. List A states it adds no evening or weekend surcharge.
- Travel. HomeStars mentions travel charges outside a firm’s service area. List B states no distance surcharges; List D says distance can affect the travel cost. Put your neighbourhood in the request.
- Disposal and brand surcharges. HomeStars lists disposal of old parts, and surcharges for specific brands or models, among hidden costs.
- Tax. The Canada Revenue Agency lists Ontario’s HST at 13%. A $400 spring pair before tax is $452 after it.
Two repairs on one visit
HomeStars prices springs and cables replaced together at $200–$500 across Canada. List A says frayed cables or flat-spotted rollers found during a spring job get priced as well. If a second problem turns up, ask for it as its own priced line, so you approve the urgent part and decide on the rest. A frayed cable on its own is covered on the broken cable page.
When the total argues for a new door
HomeStars says a repair is usually the better spend when the damage is one panel, one spring or one cable on a door under about ten years old. Replacement makes more sense once repairs approach half the cost of a new door, or when the door lacks pinch-resistant panels. The HomeStars Ottawa page puts a new single door installed at $700–$1,500 and a double at $1,200–$2,500. HomeStars also says an opener made before 1993 lacks the photo-eyes now required and should be replaced. More on that call: repair or replace.
The quote, and Ontario’s rules
Ontario requires a written agreement for any contract over $50. It must itemize the products and services and give the total with all taxes. If the contract includes an estimate, the business can charge at most 10% above it unless you need extra or different work and both of you sign a change. If you sign at home, you have a 10-day cooling-off period, and deposits come back within 15 days of your notice. If you asked the company to start during those 10 days and then cancel, it can charge reasonable payment for work and parts that cannot be returned.
What to write so the price lands close
Say whether the door is a single or a double, roughly how tall, and whether it is insulated. Say what failed: a bang and a heavy door, a loose cable at a bottom corner, a grinding opener. Add a photo of the springs above the door, the opener’s brand and rough age, your neighbourhood, and whether the visit can wait for regular hours.
Who you are dealing with
Ottawa Garage Door Desk passes your request to one independent local garage door company. That company calls you back, looks at the door, gives its own written price and does the work. The price you pay is the one on its quote.
Questions people ask
How much does garage door repair cost in Ottawa?
The HomeStars Ottawa page puts repairs at $150–$600, depending on the issue and the parts involved. Its Canada-wide guide gives $150–$400 for a typical repair, with most people paying about $260.
Why do the Ottawa firm lists differ from the Canada-wide guide?
The Canada-wide guide covers jobs across the country. Each Ottawa list is one firm’s own figure, in its own format, and one of them adds a service call to small jobs. Ask the company what its figure includes.
Is HST included in the prices?
Ask. One Ottawa list states its prices before HST. The Canada Revenue Agency lists Ontario’s HST at 13%, so a spring pair listed from $400 comes to $452 with tax. The quote should show the total with tax.
Do I pay for the visit if the repair is small?
It depends on the company. One Ottawa list charges a service call from $150, waived when the repair comes to more than $250, so a roller set or an opener repair booked on its own carries the call. Ask before the visit.
Is a spring priced per spring or for the pair?
Both ways appear in Ottawa. One list prices a single spring from $275 and the pair from $400; another says spring repair from $250 without saying whether that is one spring or two. On a door with two springs, ask for the price of one and of the pair.
